A List of Cool Websites
There’s a lot to hate about the internet these days.
But that doesn’t mean there still isn’t plenty of magic to be found, if you look closely. There might even be more magical websites around today than there were at any point in the past—humans have had a few decades to build them, and what gets built tends to stick around. So we made a list of cool websites.
The list exists because venturing onto the internet shouldn’t mean defaulting to the same couple of websites to do the same couple of things. It’s a big, sometimes beautiful place. Explore it. If you read this list and think of a cool website that you think would fit the (incredibly nebulous) criteria, please send it to us.
Personal websites
Professionally, having a personal website can set you apart (and help you get hired). Personally, it can just be fun to have. And you have something to send people to when they ask to see your art, or your work, or whatever it is that you do. Each site is here for a slightly different reason. Maybe they are well-designed. Maybe they are well-written. Maybe they are just funny. But they are all good.

(In case you were thinking about it, don’t bother comparing those last two sites with the two sites linked from our Contact page. Those are totally different guys. And anyway, that would be really self-indulgent.)
Other cool websites
Seat61: Probably the best website in the world about train travel.
Fallen London: A weird, interesting, Gothic browser game.
Chronotrains: Pick a starting point and see how far you can get by train in X# of hours.
Public Domain Review: Essays about art that has fallen into the public domain.
Etymonline: Probably the best free entomology site. Learn the history of words.
Rome2Rio: Learn how to get from anywhere to anywhere, with any form of transport.
Skiplagged: Book (sometimes) cheaper tickets that are (sometimes) against airlines’ rules.
The Useless Web: Does what it says on the tin. Also a way to find other cool websites.
Radio Garden: Listen to radio broadcasts from around the world.
Astronaut: Watch random untitled YouTube videos with no views.
This to That: Glue advice.
Futureme: Write a letter to your future self.
Flight Connections: See every direct flight from every airport. Very helpful when planning.
Open Source Shakespeare: Search Shakespeare plays for any word.
Letters of Note: Famous historical letters.
Stellarium: A planetarium in your browser.
The Deep Sea: Who says we’ve only explored 5% of the ocean? It’s all here.
Sleeping in Airports: Kind of like Seat61 except it’s a guide for sleeping in airports.
EarthCam: Live webcams of places in real-time.
Pointer Pointer: Watch somebody point at your cursor.
Anna’s Archive: Download almost any book for free. This is not an endorsement. But it’s a cool site.
Flightradar24: See almost any plane in the sky, in real-time.
Random Streetview: Does what the name says. Fun to find obscure, beautiful places to travel.
Wirecutter: Find the best things. Not what it used to be, but still okay.
