It's become something of a tradition on this blog to poke fun at famous clichés. We've written about the definition of insanity, about the golden rule, about "do what the locals do," about the term 'augmented reality,' about the idea that it's never too late to start... There are more than I thought there were when I sat down to write this!

But we've never really attacked what is maybe most writing-adjacent phrase of them all:

A picture is worth a thousand words.

So, is a picture really worth a thousand words? That is what our new writing contest, 1Picture1000Words, is trying to find out. The contest is rather simple: (1) Contestants look at a (kind of ridiculous) photo we chose. (2) Contestants write 1,000 words that relate to the photo in some way. (3) In September, we announce the winners.

Perhaps it goes without saying that the winner gets $1000.

If you'd like to participate, or know people who have, you can go check out the contest here. True to the theme, more than 1,000 people have signed up to participate already. If this sounds interesting to you, we would encourage you to participate; it would be fun to see what Quarter Mile readers come up with. Be creative!

Like our previous writing contest, DEAR ALIENS, this one is free to enter. But unlike DEAR ALIENS, you do not have to mail a physical letter this time. You can submit online. Put your email in on the official website and get the instructions.

What should you write? We don't know. But we'd encourage you to think outside of the box. You're writing the official 1,000 words for this photo, after all. Make them count. And have fun.
